Hedge Druidry

Adventures on the Urban Hedgerow

About

It is safe to say that most people understand what “Urban” is. Fewer know or understand what a Druid is. And even fewer know what a Hedge Druid means. To muddy the waters we tossed the words Urban and Hedge together. The focus of this site is Urban Druidry. At its simplest, Urban refers to ideas or things that are, “of the city.” Yes the word Urban comes with a lot of its own baggage. That baggage is a story for another blog. So when I write Urban think City.

When I write Urban and you read it as City I’m referring to Baltimore, Maryland. Baltimore is the largest city in Maryland but it is by no means the oldest. That claim rightfully belongs to St. Mary’s City – established in 1634 (Cowgill). It wasn’t until 1725 that what would eventually become Baltimore City was chartered as Baltimore Town along the banks of the Patapsco River. (Heritage ) How these little history facts fit into the larger picture in articles on the Spirits of the Land.

What about the “Hedge” part? A history of hedges and hedgerows is a rabbit’s warren we don’t need to get lost in. Suffice it to say hedge refers to self trained and usually independent. In other words a druid who is self trained and “works” alone.

If I could sum up druids and Druidry in a few short paragraphs the rest of this website would be a little pointless. Note however that we’re talking about modern Druidry – modern Druidry in America particularly the United States.
